Theresa May in her statement issued at 10:15 GMT announced General Elections in UK
-
Election to be held 8th June
-
Government has the right plan to negotiate with the EU
-
Britain is leaving EU and there can be no turning back
-
Other parties oppose the governments Brexit approach
-
There should be unity in Westminster but there’s division
One of the backdoor ways to stop Brexit was calling an election and having staying in the EU on the manifesto. May’s comments rule that out. She’s using this to try and strengthen her hand. It’s a big risk as it means this election will be on Brexit. The issue is that the main opposition (Labour) party is behind Brexit so even if they win, they’ll have a mandate to take us out also, unless their manifesto is to stay in.
